Linklaters lawyers help eyeWitness to Atrocities build evidence of human rights crimes

Linklaters is working with eyeWitness to Atrocities to help facilitate justice for international human rights violations.

eyeWitness has created an app that can be used to capture images and video footage of human rights violations and atrocity crimes around the world, with data being sent from locations including Latin America, Europe, Africa, South-East Asia and the Middle East. The app verifies the authenticity of the footage and creates an electronic chain of custody, sending it back to eyeWitness where it can be analysed and objectively described by volunteer lawyers from firms such as Linklaters. Lawyers help eyeWitness to review every image and video they receive, to ensure that it meets the legal requirements to be used as evidence across judicial processes.

Recently, Linklaters lawyers completed a marathon review session to help eyeWitness work through the increasing amount of evidence they are receiving from around the world. The aim is to help eyeWitness to support prosecutions for the most heinous international crimes and bring justice to the victims of these atrocities. In total, 9 lawyers from Linklaters, Debevoise & Plimpton and Hogan Lovells reviewed footage over the course of the day.

“Our work is helping with a much bigger cause, and the way in which we are doing so is both innovative and rewarding. We’re helping people to build their case, and the huge volume of data we’re processing shows just how much the initiative has been embraced around the world.” Ali Alahmad, trainee solicitor, Linklaters' Dispute Resolution division
